Last night it was announced who the winner of the Mercury Prize 2017 was, and the winner thoroughly deserved it. Sampha overtook 11 other nominees to win the award for his extraordinary debut Process. The other nominees included Ed Sheeran, Loyle Carner, The XX, alt-j and favourites Glass Animals and Kate Tempest.
Sampha was awarded the Mercury Prize trophy and £25,000 along with prestige of having a Mercury Prize winning debut. The artist who has collaborated with artists such as Solange and Kanye West told the BBC he only made the album now because he hadn’t previously felt ready for such fame. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine earlier this year the South London singer said “I want to leave music that some kid is going to find and put on some headphones and [it will] just transport them, like I was when I was into records,” and think he has more than achieved that and is a more than worthy winner.
